For all of us fitness and health oriented people out there, we’ve all had the experience of leaving our protein filled shaker bottles in a hot car for way too long. Then we’re terrified to open it for fear the smell will take us out. I’ve even thrown completely food blender bottles away because I didn’t want to bother cleaning them or attempting anyway.

This is a problem for a couple of reasons:

  1. The smell is usually pretty bad, like…really bad.
  2. Most people end up throwing perfectly good shaker bottles away and wasting hard earned money.

But recently I’ve found a pretty simple solution to get rid of almost any odor or smell from even the worst bottles. So let’s go ahead and jump in, no need to drag this article out am I right?

The ingredients

Below are a list of the things you’ll need to make this work:

  • Your disturbing or gross shaker bottle
  • Extremely hot water (or the hottest you can get from the sink)
  • 1–2 drops of dish soap (preferably one tough on germs and what not)
  • 1 Tbsp. of ground cinnamon

The Fix

Once you have all your ingredients in place pour the hot water into the shaker bottle only filling it about halfway.

Next, drop in all the other ingredients and shake it vigorously just as if you were trying to mix up one of those delicious protein shakes you do before or after the gym.

After you’ve mixed everything up you’ll want to let it sit for a little while. I usually find that at least 10–15 minutes does the job in most cases. However, if you have a really bad one that’s been idle for way too long you may want to let it sit overnight for good measure.

After you’ve let the mixture sit for the desired amount of time just rinse the bottle out super well and give it a good dry. I’m most cases the residue and odor should be gone (unless you just REALLY did a number on it).

For good measure you may want to give it a good scrub with a bottle brush or something similar.

Conclusion

Not very fancy, but at the end of the day it works and can keep you from tossing old shaker bottles that you deem to be too far gone. I’ve used this on all of my shaker bottles and haven’t had any issues thus far.

What other ways do you guys like to clean your shaker bottles that have had protein residue sitting in them for extended periods of time?
